A modular interior system exploring how shared spaces can offer moments of privacy, rest, and personal control without becoming isolated or closed.
Shared environments are designed to accommodate many people, yet they often provide very little control over how those spaces are experienced. Noise, constant visibility, movement, and a lack of personal boundaries can make even well-designed interiors mentally tiring. Pause / Common Ground explores how small-scale spatial interventions can make shared environments more adaptable to individual needs
The system consists of modular seating, movable acoustic panels, and semi-enclosed work areas that can be combined in different configurations. Users can create a quiet individual corner, a semi-private workspace, or a small area for conversation. Soft materials reduce noise and visual distractions while maintaining natural light and a connection to the surrounding environment.
Wellbeing is treated not as an additional feature, but as part of the spatial infrastructure. The ability to temporarily withdraw, reduce sensory stimulation, or adjust proximity to others can significantly change how comfortable a shared environment feels. The project proposes that successful shared interiors should support both social interaction and moments of individual retreat.
